END OF LIFE VEHICLE:

Disposing of your car, van or truck at the end of its life is no longer just a matter of dropping it off at your nearest scrap yard or just letting somebody take it away.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) must be properly notified of its disposal; otherwise as its last registered keeper you will be committing an offence which carries severe penalties.

If you scrap your car, you must by law receive a Certificate of Destruction and ensure that the DVLA is informed or risk an £80 fine.

There is a very simple way to make sure that this does not happen to you. When your vehicle is received at our recycling plant and processed, we will issue you with a Certificate of Destruction which ends your responsibility for the vehicle from its date of issue. We will also inform the DVLA on your behalf that your vehicle has been recycled.

Only an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) can issue these certificates.

Disposing of your vehicle at our modern purpose-built facility means not only that you can get your necessary Certificate of Destruction, but also that your vehicle will be de-polluted and recycled to the highest possible standard. This means that we are protecting both you and the environment.

Why recycle your vehicle?

Around two million cars are scrapped every year in the UK. It is estimated that up to 50% of the 20,000 tonnes of oil removed from vehicles by motorists is handled improperly.  If oil finds its way into sewers and water courses it can cause significant contamination.

As car ownership continues to increase it is important that the proportion of each end-of-life vehicle (ELV) being recycled is maximised, so that the environmental impact of car ownership is reduced.

In 2005 the UK Government implemented new legislation called the End of Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive. The objective of the directive is to ensure that as much of a vehicle is recycled as possible whilst ensuring that all hazardous materials are treated appropriately.

The Process

Many parts of a vehicle can be recycled, from the oil and its filter to its battery and plastic bumpers. Once the vehicle reaches our de-pollution centre we remove all of the fluids and the parts that can be sold for reuse or recycled. We then dispose of all the remaining potentially environmental polluting residues.

The vehicle shell is then shredded and broken down. Ferrous metals are removed by magnetic separation and non-ferrous metals are sorted both mechanically and by hand.

Our ‘one stop’ solution

A Riddel Skip Hire has a waste management licence and operates an Authorised Treatment Facility which is registered with the DVLA and the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA). This means we can recycle your vehicle legally without causing any harm to the environment.

We are appointed by the Environment Agency and are a member of the CARTAKEBACK scheme which is approved by over 70% of vehicle manufacturers to dispose of end of life vehicles.

Once your vehicle has been de-polluted we will provide you with a Certificate of Destruction and pass the information to DVLA.

This demonstrates that your vehicle has been taken to an approved treatment site and allows the DVLA to deregister the vehicle. Without an official certificate you could be penalised under continuous registration laws.

We will collect your vehicle and pay up to £80 for each complete specific make and model of car.
